The story of an oral surgeon in the making! Dr. Bryan McLelland shares his humble origins on taking a step towards becoming a health care professional.

Meet Dr. McLelland

I did not grow up thinking I was going to be a dentist. I started off at 19 finding myself in dental school, and then finished dental school and when I was done that, I discovered that I didn’t want to go directly into private practice. So I looked around for an additional year of advanced training and decided to go into a residency program, which is a one year program in Denver General Hospital. I knew that Denver had an oral surgery training program. So I wanted to kind of see what oral surgeons did. Once I started that program and got a taste for what oral surgeons did, I found it very appealing and applied to Oral Surgery schools across the United States and found myself in Chicago, Illinois, at Cook County Hospital.

Q: Why do you love what you do?

You know, with, with oral surgery and with dentistry, it’s really easy to get caught up on the technical part of what you’re doing and fixing teeth. Which is, which is good, which is rewarding. But I think above and beyond that, when you have someone that comes in with a significant issue, maybe they’re missing all of their teeth. Maybe they have a cleft lip and palate, maybe their jaws have grown disproportionately and you can, you can help fix that mechanical, that facial problem. But not only that, you can see the change in their self-confidence and their self-esteem and how they feel about themselves, and how they interact with the world and how they live their lives becomes even more rewarding and enjoyable.
